Herbs are filled with antioxidants and essential nutrients. They are excellent in flavoring up your favorite dishes. These edible plants also look pretty and make an excellent accent to your kitchen.
Most herbs are very versatile, and grow well in the ground, containers, and even in water. Water-grown herbs are just as flavorsome as those you grow in the garden.
Growing from seeds can be a bit tricky and must be perfected through trial and error, so, it is best to start by planting pre-potted herbs.
You can root herb cuttings in plain water in glass bottles. Chlorinated water and distilled water must be avoided. The bleaching chemical may destroy the plant tissues, and, distilling removes some essential minerals that allow the herbs to grow. You can use rainwater, but spring water is best because it has some amount of dissolved minerals that may be of use to plants.
For the containers, any glass bottles will do. Colored bottles are best because roots generally like to grow away from light. For clear bottles, you can just wrap a piece of paper or cloth around the bottle to keep the root zone in the dark. Use narrow-mouthed containers to support the cuttings and keep them nearly upright. But if you’re using a wide-mouthed container, cover the top with nylon or wire netting and insert the cuttings through the hole. The netting also prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water and multiplying.
To grow herb cuttings in water, select young, healthy, actively growing herbs and snip off 6-inch sections from growing tips and put them in the water-filled containers. You can also use the ones you get fresh from the supermarket. Just wash them in plain water and cut off the lower portion.Strip off all of the leaves from the lower two-thirds of the stem before placing them in water.
Put the herbs in a sunny, warm place, keeping an eye out for roots. Once roots appear, you’ll start to see new growth on the shoots. Clip each leaf as it grows to full size, or cut off the shoot tips as needed to encourage the stem to produce more leaves at the top. The stem will grow for months in this way and will give you a few but steady supply of fresh herbs.

- Rosemary – Rosemary is a fragrant culinary herb which is also recognized for its note-worthy health benefiting phyto-nutrients, anti-oxidants, and essential acids. The semi-woody cuttings of this herb take longer to root, but spring cuttings of new shoots may be faster.
